On Saturday mornings, everyone in my family helps clean the house. We start after breakfast. My father opens the windows, and my mother takes the mats outside. My younger sister, Sinta, and I usually clean the living room. I wipe the low table while she puts her toys away. This sounds like an easy job, but some of her toys have very small parts. Before I sweep the floor, I always ask her to look under the sofa. She often finds a wheel or a toy block there.
Sinta keeps her toys in two boxes beside the cupboard. One box is for toys she plays with every day. The other is for toys she wants to give away. On some Saturdays, she takes a toy out of the second box and puts it back in the first. I ask her why she wants to keep it. Sometimes she has a good reason. A small red car, for example, has only three wheels, but she still uses it in her games. She says it belongs to a driver who always needs help.
When we finish the living room, we carry the mats back inside and take turns sweeping the front steps. Sinta likes to sweep the top step because she can see the street from there. She often stops to watch people walk by, so her step takes a little longer to clean. When the work is done, we sit on the steps and drink water. From there, I can see the clean living room through the open door. By lunchtime, there are usually toy blocks on the floor again.
